The Wall Street Journal Online books section just published a brief book review of The Gold Leaf Lady and Other Parapsychological Investigations. The review itself is interesting in that it does give a nod toward an author (in this case a Mr. Stephen E. Braude) who tries to present real psychics as well as fake psychics in a fairly non-biased way.
The book reviewer, John Desio, does a good job explaining that the book itself presents five cases of claimed psychic abilities from five individuals, and attempts to either validate or disprove the psychic’s claims. As you might imagine, many of the claimed psychics are either proven to be fakes, or refuse to be tested and thus become suspects by default.
However, one case, a former Bell Boy in Chicago named Ted Serios, claimed in the mid 1960s to be able to use a piece of cardboard to channel psychic energy onto a piece of Polaroid film. Mr. Serios’ claims were put to the test by a photographer, a Mr. Nile Root, who determined that Mr. Serios was actually inserting an image into the cardboard, which then was reproduced by the Polaroid film. The interesting thing is Mr Braude interviewed a doctor who worked with Mr. Serios, and then had a session with Mr Serios after which Mr. Braude declared this an important case and not a psychic fake.
The book reviewer, Mr. Desio, concludes his review by mentioning that the biggest criticism he has of psychics is their inability to use their psychic abilities to generate a nice profit for themselves. His final sentence indicates that to prove psychic abilities a psychic should be willing to make a big bet on the outcome of the Super Bowl, and we can only assume that by winning the bet the psychic would then prove they are psychic.
You can read the full review of the book at the Wall Street Journal online, and you can purchase the book by searching at your favorite eBookseller for the title: The Gold Leaf Lady and Other Parapsychological Investigations by Stephen E. Braude.

What are Psychic Mediums?
A psychic medium (often called just “Medium”) is a person who is said to be able to communicate with spirits or the energy of those who have passed on. So how can we prove one way or the other that a medium is real? Can the living communicate with those who have passed on?
Mediums will explain that their ability to communicate with spirits or the energy of those who have passed on is something that they cannot explain. Even those who make a living conducting readings cannot explain in detail how it works. Mediums use several methods to communicate including going into a trance, using objects to help them channel the psychic energy, or using extra sensory perception (ESP).
Mediums and Trances:
Mediums who use trances generally try to tune into psychic energy by putting themselves into a state of mental calm. By clearing their minds of thoughts and the physical world, they explain that they are better able to communicate with the spirit world.
How Extra Sensory Perception works:
Mediums who use Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) say they have the ability to receive information from an energy that is outside the normal energy sources. Mediums will often move around or step into or out of spaces to enable better communication with the energy they are trying to reach. This is different from Mediums who use objects, who usually are stationary.
Mediums and the use of Objects:
Mediums who use objects such as minerals or crystals, crystal balls or other items are said to be able to channel energy through the object, and receive focused energy through the object. Often people think of Gypsies and crystal balls, but there are several common uses of objects by Mediums including candles, incense and personal items that belonged to a person who passed on, and whom the Medium is trying to reach.

“Real” Psychics?
Psychics have been in history, literature and art for thousands of years, so why are we still unable to prove, or disprove, that psychics are real for once and for all? From the sisters (or “witches”) of Hamlet to the ancient Babylonian astrologers to the present day psychics that help detectives solve mysteries, there’s been plenty of talk about psychics, but no solid, scientific “proof” of psychics or psychic abilities. So how then do we explain the unexplainable? When impossible things happen, how do we explain the possibility?
Psychics in Your Family?
Do you know a psychic? Perhaps a family member or friend of yours seems to have psychic ability. How do you feel about that? How are they treated? Often family or friends keep their abilities quiet, for fear of being seen as abnormal. Some must hide their abilities due to social or religious reasons. Some people with psychic ability are uncertain about what to do about it. Like anything else in our lives, psychic ability is unique and different from person to person. There’s no university courses or degree program to teach someone how to be a psychic. You won’t find listings for psychics in the advert sections of daily newspapers. People who believe they have psychic ability are pretty much on their own when it comes to training and education. So how does your family member or friend “train” themselves to be a psychic? Most learn about their psychic ability through studying what material they can find in libraries, on the internet or through other media. It’s not the best way to train, but for many learning by self-training is how they become psychics.
Are you a psychic?
If you believe you have psychic ability, how do you feel about that? Are you proud of your ability? Do you understand it? Or, are you confused and unclear about why you have your gift, and what to do about it? Sometimes people assume that because you have psychic abilities you have the ability to peek into their private lives, perhaps learning about issues they would rather not be made public. Most people do not understand psychics and psychic powers, and because they do not understand it they become fearful or concerned about psychics. Other than a few famous psychics on TV or in other media, most psychics can go through life with little or no recognition for their special talents. If you are a psychic, only you can determine how you wish to develop your psychic abilities, if at all.
Do you think Psychics are real?
What do you think? Do you know a psychic, or are you a psychic? How are psychic’s treated in society today, any better than in the past? Do you believe in psychics?
