Study: Loneliness breeds supernatural belief
According to a recent University of Chicago study of loneliness and the effect it may have on people, as reported by LiveScience.com, loneliness may increase the likelihood of people believing in the supernatural. To quote the article;
“People who feel lonely are more likely to believe in the supernatural, whether that is God, angels or miracles, a new study finds.”
According to the article, Nicholas Epley the director of the study, tested the theory by introducing three groups of undergrads to thee separate movie scenes. Each group was asked to emotionally try to feel what the character was feeling as best they could.
The first group saw a scene from Cast Away, to expose that group to feelings of loneliness. The second group was introduced to a scene from Silence of the Lambs, to expose them to feelings of fear. The last group was introduced to a clip from Major League, to expose them to comedy. All three groups were then asked to describe a pet they owned or knew well with descriptions that included anthropomorphic traits as well as simple behavioral descriptions.
According to the article:
“Participants from the loneliness group were more likely to describe the pet using the anthropomorphic descriptions than those in the fear or control groups.
All three groups were also asked to rate their belief in ghosts, angels, the devil, miracles, curses, and God, and again, those in the loneliness group reported stronger belief in these supernatural agents.”
The explanation for this behavior of loneliness in belief of the supernatural as presented by Nicholas Epley via the article is;
“When people feel lonely, they may try to rekindle old friendships, seek out new ones or, as Epley’s study suggests, they may create social connections by anthropomorphizing nearby gadgets, such as computers or cars, pets, or by believing in supernatural events or religious figures.”
Can Loneliness Lead to Belief in Psychics?
The summary of this study indicates that it’s more likely lonely people may believe in religion, the supernatural or related types of anthropomorphic beliefs.
There are potential issues with the study, for example, which group was the Control group? Also, can we really assume that just because someone sees a movie clip that they will be able to emote with a wider group of people known as “lonely?” Perhaps a better method would be to actually find a group of lonely people, as defined by profiling tests, along with a group of fearful and light-hearted people.
Finally, what constitutes the definition of “lonely?” Is it simply being socially unable to connect with people, or is it a geographic means of separating an individual from a social group, or is it both (or perhaps neither)?

Are Pets Psychic?
Is your pet a psychic? In a recent column in the Herald-Review.com the author, Dr. Larry Baker, a vet and apparently animal lover, writes on the topic of pets and whether they possess psychic abilities or not. It’s an interesting question considering the recent interest in mainstream media concerning all things psychic. Dr. Baker writes:
“Are some pets psychic? I doubt it, in spite of many anecdotal stories, “pet psychics” on television and even incidences I have witnessed, which may seem inconceivable otherwise.”
Pets, amazing things or psychics?
Pets truly are amazing, they bring us unconditional love and attention. Sometimes they do things that seem completely incredible, and things that are just not easily explained. For example, finding their way home after being trapped in a train or truck, alerting strangers to save a owner who has a medical emergency or other amazing things. Although incredible, these feats themselves are not necessarily evidence of any psychic ability.
Wikipedia defines the term “psychic” as:
“Relating to or denoting mental abilities or phenomena that are apparently inexplicable by known natural laws, since they seem to transcend the confines of the brain…”
The issue here is the term “natural laws,” which most would agree applies to our pet friends.
To summarize Dr. Baker: It is completely fitting for pets to use the natural abilities they are given. For example, consider dogs with their incredible smell, cats that seem able to seek in almost complete dark or birds that are able to fly south for the winter, and north again each year with unerring accuracy. Although incredible, all of these events can be explained by the natural abilities animals have. Thus, just because our pet friends can do seemingly incredible things, this does not “prove” they have psychic abilities.

Your Inner Psychic
A recent book excerpt on the MSNBC Today show site from psychic intuitive Char Margolis titled “Discover Your Inner Wisdom” teaches how to tap the intuition in each of us. Of special interest is Char’s message about combining logic, common sense and intuition to make choices:
“My students and clients say that they make better choices when they use their intuition. Intuition can take you places logic and common sense never will. And when you combine logic, common sense, and intuition, you’ll make even wiser choices.”
Your Intuition & Psychic Energy
According to Margolis, intuition is the universe giving us a message, it’s up to us to tune in the psychic message and apply it in our lives - something psychics do continually. She mentions that random intuition are those occasional pings from the universe that we receive, such as knowing in advance that the phone is going to ring or having a concern about walking down a certain street.
In my own life, my wife recently had a psychic intuition event. As she was driving our child to an after-school activity, she had a strong feeling to drive out of her way past a park in our neighborhood. Against her better logical judgement, she listened to this psychic directive and went out of her way. It was a good thing, because she saw a friend of our child with a strange man in the park. The hairs on her neck stood out and she knew there was something wrong.
After confronting the stranger, who promptly ran away, the story came out that the girl had met him online, and that she had agreed to meet this stranger to go for lunch. The stranger said he was 18, but actually he was in his late 3os! Clearly my wife’s intuition helped save a young teenage girl from a potentially very dangerous situation.

Kiwi Psychic Challenges
Apparently our New Zealand friends have been enjoying a reality show called Sensing Murder, in which psychics are put through some reality TV psychic investigation for public entertainment. It’s interesting that there is a heightened interest in psychics and paranormal these days in the media. In the U.S., programs such as Medium and some cable TV shows seek to provide edu-tainment around psychics, haunted places, mediums or other paranormal events.
Psychics on TV
So why are there so many psychic shows on television these days? The answer may be the interest generated by the public and psychics themselves. The internet has certainly lead to interest in psychics and the paranormal, but long before the internet came about there were psychics, astrologers and mediums plying their trades.
This interest in psychics is not new to our culture. Psychics and interest in paranormal events was around during Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman and the ages leading up to today. So why so much interest on TV? Perhaps just because it’s easier to produce reality TV shows that deal with more obscure topics than sports, news or drama.
16 Psychic Programs
A simple search for the term “psychic” on TVguide.com reveals 16 programs that are about or have the word psychics as a topic, including 11 TV shows and 5 movies. It’s interesting to see that the popularity of psychics has seemingly increased, but it’s also interesting to think that perhaps the interest has been there all along, and that the media are simply tapping into this interest to produce new programming material.

On November 30th Forbes.com book reviewer Michael Maiello wrote a short review about Mary Browne’s book, The 5 Rules of Thought: How to Use the Power of your Mind to Get What You Want. It was an interesting review of a psychic book in that Mr. Maiello took the time to actually visit Mary Browne and have a cold reading done. As a psychic that has Wall Street clients who seek her advice, it seems logical for Mr Maiello to conduct such an interview and book review.
In his review, Mr. Maiello mentions that Mary Browne conducts positive psychic readings and helps people focus on the actions that can bring about a person’s wishes, even those with little to no psychic ability. She writes that for a person to succeed you must decide on what you want, see it happen in your mind, create an action plan and stick with it, believe in your plan and accomplish it with persistence and patience. Sounds like great advice to me!
As a psychic with clients willing to pay $400 per hour for a reading, you can bet that Mary Browne knows a thing or two about how to inspire Wall Street. It’s interesting to note that Mr. Maiello never really indicates whether the believes that Mary Browne may be a real psychic, or not. Although he does indicate that because of the speed with which Mary Browne conducted his reading, he had a tendency to remember the things that she got right, and not the things she didn’t.
In the end, Mr Maiello mentions that the Mary Browne’s book is a quick read and would be a great Holiday gift to anyone who needs peace of mind, and in these times that could just about be all of us.
For further information see Mr Maiello’s psychic book review at Forbes.com.

“Real” Psychics?
Psychics have been in history, literature and art for thousands of years, so why are we still unable to prove, or disprove, that psychics are real for once and for all? From the sisters (or “witches”) of Hamlet to the ancient Babylonian astrologers to the present day psychics that help detectives solve mysteries, there’s been plenty of talk about psychics, but no solid, scientific “proof” of psychics or psychic abilities. So how then do we explain the unexplainable? When impossible things happen, how do we explain the possibility?
Psychics in Your Family?
Do you know a psychic? Perhaps a family member or friend of yours seems to have psychic ability. How do you feel about that? How are they treated? Often family or friends keep their abilities quiet, for fear of being seen as abnormal. Some must hide their abilities due to social or religious reasons. Some people with psychic ability are uncertain about what to do about it. Like anything else in our lives, psychic ability is unique and different from person to person. There’s no university courses or degree program to teach someone how to be a psychic. You won’t find listings for psychics in the advert sections of daily newspapers. People who believe they have psychic ability are pretty much on their own when it comes to training and education. So how does your family member or friend “train” themselves to be a psychic? Most learn about their psychic ability through studying what material they can find in libraries, on the internet or through other media. It’s not the best way to train, but for many learning by self-training is how they become psychics.
Are you a psychic?
If you believe you have psychic ability, how do you feel about that? Are you proud of your ability? Do you understand it? Or, are you confused and unclear about why you have your gift, and what to do about it? Sometimes people assume that because you have psychic abilities you have the ability to peek into their private lives, perhaps learning about issues they would rather not be made public. Most people do not understand psychics and psychic powers, and because they do not understand it they become fearful or concerned about psychics. Other than a few famous psychics on TV or in other media, most psychics can go through life with little or no recognition for their special talents. If you are a psychic, only you can determine how you wish to develop your psychic abilities, if at all.
Do you think Psychics are real?
What do you think? Do you know a psychic, or are you a psychic? How are psychic’s treated in society today, any better than in the past? Do you believe in psychics?

What is a Psychic Medium?
A psychic medium (often called just “medium”) is a person who is said to be able to communicate with spirits or the energy of those who have passed on. There are several ways a Medium communicates with the energy from those who have passed on, including using a trance, Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) or by using objects that “focus” the communication such as crystal balls or other items.
Psychic Mediums who use a Trance:
Some Mediums go into a trance to form a connection between the energy and their own mind and body. The trance state is apparently a method of better “hearing” or tuning in to the energy. A trance is a state in which the Medium tunes out the physical world in order to better tune in to the spiritual energy around us. Mediums who use trances are said to open their minds to allow the spiritual energy to temporarily enter their body.Often, Mediums who communicate using trances use rituals or special ceremonies to enter the trance. Many cultures throughout the world have used rituals or ceremonies to initiate trances for hundreds or thousands of years.
Psychic Mediums who use Extra Sensory Perception:
There are Mediums who do not go into a trance or otherwise tune out the physical world to communicate with the energy from those who have passed. These mediums use extra sensory perception, or ESP, to connect with the spiritual energy around them. As with other forms of perception, like vision, these psychics usually rely on sensing the energy around them or around other people or places.
Psychic Mediums who use objects:
By using objects such as cards, crystals or other items, some Mediums are able to focus or tune-in to the energy around them. These Mediums often rely on objects to help them, but will explain that it is not the object itself that has the energy. The objects these Mediums use do not have any ability to sense or “read” the energy flowing through them either, it is the Mediums that do this.

Welcome to A Real Psychic
A real psychic is a web site designed for those who want to learn more about psychics. “A Real Psychic” has educational information about psychics, parapsychology and the paranormal. If you are looking for information about psychics, you’ve come to the right place. We hope you will find the information you need to make a more informed choice about psychics after visiting arealpsychic.com.
Psychic Definition
Wikipedia defines the term “psychic” as: “Relating to or denoting mental abilities or phenomena that are apparently inexplicable by known natural laws, since they seem to transcend the confines of the brain. People who are thought to have these abilities or to be able to produce these phenomena are often called “psychics”. The term comes from the Greek word psychikos, meaning “of the soul, mental,” which is in turn derived from the Greek word psyche (soul/mind).”
Do real psychics predict the future?
Real Psychics use psychic readings to help them predict likely future events, but they cannot predict the future absolutely. This is because each of us has been given the gift of free will, a real psychic will acknowledge this. We can choose to change our actions, which changes our course in life. The statement that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks is not true for people. A real psychic will tell you you’re never too old to learn, and change! Real psychics can predict possible futures for you, but it’s up to you whether you make that future real or not.
Can a psychic bring back a former lover?
Getting back together with a former lover is probably one of the most common reasons people go to psychics. Psychics can detect the psychic energy around you, including the energy of others. A real psychic will give you guidance on how others may impact your life, including if there’s a chance of getting back together with former lovers. Because we are able to make our own decisions, and change our life directions, a real psychic will tell you that nothing is guaranteed. Because you can change life directions, and because your former lover can change life directions, it can be difficult to determine with certainty that a former lover will come back.
The best way to handle questions about a former lover is to learn from the psychic what decisions you may need to make to help bring positive conditions in your life conditions. This puts you in the best possible situation to bring your former lover back.
Can a psychic talk to spirits?
Some psychics can tune in to the energy of those who have died. These psychics are usually called Psychic Mediums, or just Mediums. However, this communication is not exactly the same as talking the way people do. The energy of spirits what psychics hear in their minds and interpret, not an actual voice. Usually this communication is one-way, meaning the psychic can receive the energy from those who have died, but cannot carry on a conversation like you and I would on a phone call. This communication is also normally from spirits who have not yet passed on to the other side.
How can I find a real psychic?
It can be confusing trying to find a real psychic. This is because there is no scientific way to determine the exact amount of psychic ability a person may have. Unfortunately, there’s also fakes who are only interested in taking money from people. If you are looking for a real psychic, make sure your psychic does not show signs of being a fake. A real psychic will never promise to change or cause something to happen for you.
A real psychic will never guarantee that they can bring back lost loves, or otherwise do something for you. A real psychic does not need your personal information such as a drivers license, social security number or any other financial information about you. If your psychic is asking for this information, you are very possibly dealing with a fake psychic. The best way to find a real psychic is to ask friends and family for referrals, and to check a few references before engaging a psychic.
Why can’t real psychics forecast and improve their lives?
Often people assume that there are no real psychics because if they were real psychics, they could see their own future and improve it. After all, if psychics are real they should be able to forecast winning lottery numbers, see their own future lovers and lives, and do other things to improve their lives. So why don’t they? The answer is that real psychics feel energy around them that only sometimes has something to do with their lives.
Most often, real psychics have no more idea about what lies in their future than anyone else. A psychologist would not consider psychoanalyzing himself or herself, and likewise a real psychic would not consider trying to determine and change his or her own life.
What is Tarot and why are Tarot Cards used by Psychics?
The answer depends on who you ask. In some parts of Europe, Tarot (also know as Tarocchi in Italy and Tarock in Austria) is a card game played with a set of cards that have a “fool” card, 21 trump cards and an extra set of face cards called the “knight.” The face cards and their priority are Jack, Knight, Queen and King.
However, in the U.S. and some other western countries, the Tarot is known as a set of cards that psychics use to read the future or other important aspects for a person. When a psychic uses Tarot cards, they usually put them in a pattern known as the Spread, and the position of the cards as well as the value of the cards themselves help the psychic to read about the events, relationships or other issues facing a person.
How is a Horoscope Developed?
A horoscope can be defined as the predictions made about a persons life, loves or future based on the position, angles and influences of planets, stars, our sun and related astronomical objects on a person’s life.
By studying the position of the planets, stars and other astronomical objects at the time of a person’s birth, astrologers can evaluate and predict the factors that influence a person’s life and so predict their future.
What is Astrology?
Astrology is the study of how the position of the stars, planets, sun and related celestial objects impacts events of people, places and things. Astrology is used to learn about or answer questions about a person’s love life, whether it’s a good time to start a new business, or whether a certain year will be a good economic year, or not.
Believers in astrology hold the opinion that the movement of stars, planets and other celestial objects may have an impact on our lives and that the universe is not yet fully understood by science. Critics of astrology maintain that there is no conclusive evidence supporting the claims of astrologers, and that proven means of consistently repeating results of the practice of astrology has not occurred.
